In March, a lot of work appears on the site – our list will help you not miss anything.
March is a very important month for site owners. During this period, the foundation for the future harvest is laid. Summer residents are actively preparing for the planting season – they buy, harden and germinate seeds, plant vegetable seedlings, dig up and fertilize the soil. Gardeners process and whiten trees, and also plant young seedlings. We have compiled a detailed list of activities at the site in March so that you can do everything and not miss anything.
Keep the snow in the beds
This advice is unlikely to be useful to you, because the winter in Ukraine this year was warm and with little snow. But if snow still falls, carry out snow retention on the site. To do this, throw a pile of snow on future beds so that it takes longer to melt. This cover is very beneficial for the soil. At the same time, snow should be shoveled away from bushes and trees so that the roots do not freeze.
Inspect and trim trees
During March, walk around and inspect the trees in the garden. After winter, frost marks may remain on them that need to be healed. Remember to prune diseased, damaged and dead branches back to the first healthy bud. Young seedlings require the most attention. Berry bushes and grapes need sanitary pruning in March.
Whiten the trees
Gardeners are still arguing about whether trees need to be whitewashed. There is no consensus on the benefits of this procedure, but if you want to do it, then start in March. Whitewashing of trees in the spring is carried out to protect against pests, temperature changes and sunburn. Lime is most often used to make whitewash.
Plant new trees
Young seedlings of trees and bushes begin to be planted in the second half of March, when the soil warms up sufficiently. In the first month of spring, apricots, plums, apple trees, early pears, cherries, lilacs, jasmine, and walnuts are planted.
Before planting, make sure that the buds on the seedling have not yet swelled – otherwise it will not have time to take root. Also remember that cross-pollinated trees (such as sea buckthorn) are planted in pairs and not individually.
Treat your garden for pests
In March, insect pests begin to wake up from winter hibernation. When the air temperature does not drop below +5°, treat the garden with universal insecticides. Be sure to do this before the flower buds swell. Strawberries and berry bushes can be watered with hot (70°) water.
Hang birdhouses
Birds are the main helpers of gardeners. They feed on insect pests and their larvae. These are welcome guests in any garden. To make them visit your area more often, hang several feeders with grain. We previously wrote about what to put in a bird feeder.
Plant the seedlings
The main task for summer residents for March is to plant vegetable seedlings. At the beginning of the month, seedlings are sown:
In the middle and at the end of the month you can plant seedlings:
We also wrote when to sow cucumbers for seedlings. The date of their sowing depends on the variety of vegetable.
Pick up seedlings
After planting seedlings, they need to be properly cared for. Read about the features of caring for each type of plant. After several leaves appear, transplant the young seedlings into separate containers so that they are not crowded. This especially applies to tomatoes and eggplants.
Prepare the beds for planting
In order for future crops to take root well in the garden and produce a rich harvest, the beds must be fertilized in advance. What to sprinkle on the beds in the spring depends on what you plant on them. Cabbage and zucchini love compost, and cucumbers and eggplants will appreciate humus.
Prepare potatoes for planting
In March, potato plot owners select the best tubers to be planted. It is recommended to germinate seed potatoes so that white sprouts appear on them. Previously, we wrote about how to germinate potatoes and what are the advantages of this procedure.
Plant vegetables and flowers in open ground
March is still too cold for most plants. But some vegetables and flowers can already be planted on the site. Previously, we wrote about what to plant in open ground in March. Vegetables include radishes, early carrots, peas, beets and greens. Flowers include snapdragons, bluebells, echinacea, azarina, petunia, and annual asters.
