Tamás Šujok approved the document on his first day in office.
The President of the Republic of Hungary, Tamas Szuyok, on Tuesday, March 5, signed a protocol on the country’s ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO. This was reported on the website of the Hungarian President.
“The President of the Republic, Tamas Szujok, today signed the parliamentary decision of February 26, 2024 on Sweden’s accession to NATO,” the statement said.
Let us add that the new President of Hungary signed this document on his first day in office.
Ratification by Hungary of Sweden’s accession to NATO
On February 26, the Hungarian parliament approved Sweden’s entry into NATO. 188 Hungarian deputies voted for the adoption of the corresponding decision, 6 were against. However, for the law to come into force, the signature of the President of Hungary was still needed.
Subsequently, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg responded to the Hungarian Parliament’s support for Sweden’s entry into the Alliance.
“I welcome the vote of the Hungarian parliament to ratify Sweden’s membership in NATO. Now that all allies have approved this decision, Sweden will become the 32nd NATO ally. Sweden’s membership will make us all stronger and safer,” Stoltenberg wrote on the social network.
In January it became clear that Sweden was joining NATO. The Turkish Parliament voted to ratify the Scandinavian country’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance. The document was later signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The last country that did not make a corresponding decision was Hungary.
