The day before, Pope Francis said that strength lies in raising the white flag and starting negotiations.
The Vatican should support Ukraine in the fight for its own survival instead of repeating the mistakes of the first half of the 20th century. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba.
“The strongest is the one who takes the side of good in the battle between good and evil, and does not try to equalize them, calling it “negotiations.” As for the white flag, we know this strategy of the Vatican from the history of the first half of the 20th century. I urge you not to repeat historical mistakes and consistently support Ukraine and its people in a fair fight for their own lives,” he wrote on the social network.
Kuleba stressed that the Ukrainian flag is blue and yellow, and Ukrainians will not raise other flags. The diplomat thanked Pope Francis for his “constant prayers for peace” and called for him to come to Ukraine to support millions of Ukrainian Catholics and Greek Catholics, as well as other Ukrainians.
Pope Francis’ White Flag Statement
As wrote, the day before, Pope Francis said in an interview with journalists that in the Russian-Ukrainian war, the losing side must find the courage to admit it and agree to negotiations.
“I believe that the one who looks at the situation, thinks about the people, has the courage to raise the white flag and negotiate will be stronger,” Francis said.
Later, the Vatican had to officially justify itself because of these words. The press service said that the phrase “white flag” was suggested by a journalist, and the pontiff used it in his response.
