The President of the United States cannot make such a decision alone.
The media write that in Europe they want to prepare for the US withdrawal from NATO if Donald Trump is elected president of the country. And although the politician has such a desire, the opportunities to realize it are limited.
International security expert Taras Zhovtenko said this on Channel 24. He explained that the US President cannot make such a decision alone. This requires a decision from both the Senate and Congress.
“If Trump wins and has the idea to officially withdraw America’s participation in NATO, he will have to wait for the midterm elections in the Senate and Congress,” the expert added.
Moreover, Zhovtenko noted that it could take years to form a majority in the Senate and Congress that would support the United States’ withdrawal from the North Atlantic Alliance.
Trump’s statements about US withdrawal from NATO
As you know, presidential elections will be held in November 2024 in the United States of America. One of the candidates for this position is Donald Trump, known for his odious statements, including about the Russian war against Ukraine.
Even during his last term, Trump repeatedly spoke about the United States leaving the Alliance, saying that Europe spends too little on defense. Now he is actively using this thesis in the election race.
The media are already writing that fears of such a scenario have arisen in Europe. They are worried that Trump will withdraw the United States from NATO and collapse the Alliance. However, there are also opinions that Trump is simply bluffing, trying to get Europeans to invest more in their own defense.
