The money appeared thanks to savings in already concluded contracts to replace weapons transferred to Kyiv.
The US Department of Defense explained that the announcement of the first $300 million security assistance package to Ukraine this year was a “unique case” amid blocking of additional funding in Congress. Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh stated this at a briefing, writes European Pravda.
She also commented on the possibility of other departments providing Ukraine with similar assistance after this money appeared at the Pentagon due to savings in already concluded contracts to replace weapons transferred to Kyiv.
“If there are any other contracts that will be awarded as part of the tender, we will, of course, let you know. It happens, but these were unique circumstances,” Singh said.
She said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and President Joe Biden believed it was important to use these contracts to get Ukraine an emergency aid package in the face of a Russian military offensive. At the same time, Singh did not confirm whether the US administration decided to transfer long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, as reported by the media.
US assistance
The passage of aid to Ukraine for 2024 stalled in the US House of Representatives after the bill was approved by the Senate. Speaker Mike Johnson said that congressmen could prepare a new document that would provide for a loan or Lend-Lease.
At the same time, the White House announced the transfer of a new package of military aid to Ukraine worth $300 million. In particular, the new package will include shells for artillery and GMLRS missiles for HIMARS. ATACMS was not included in this package, although Western media announced the transfer.
