According to Gabrielius Landsbergis, Western countries have already tried to force Putin to reduce the degree of escalation.
French President Emmanuel Macron is holding back Russian President Vladimir Putin with his statements about the possible dispatch of Western troops to Ukraine. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis wrote about this on the social network X.
He noted that Western countries have already tried to force Putin to reduce the degree of escalation by limiting military assistance to Ukraine.
“This obviously did not work. There is a much greater chance that Putin will be restrained by the strategic ambiguity of Emmanuel Macron and the clearly defined goal of defeating Russia,” the Lithuanian politician concluded.
Possible introduction of Western troops into Ukraine
At the end of February, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the EU was discussing sending Western troops to Ukraine. According to him, Europe is doing everything to prevent the Russian Federation from winning the war in Ukraine.
Macron’s statement caused mixed reactions from allies. Thus, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized that sending troops to Ukraine would mean “a step towards unilateral escalation, which will cross out the path of diplomacy.”
In turn, the Bundestag called German Chancellor Olaf Scholz a “slowdown” amid Macron’s statements regarding foreign troops in Ukraine. In particular, the head of the defense committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, praised the French President for his efforts in support of Ukraine.
