The Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Station was hit directly by missiles and the fire is currently being extinguished; it is not yet possible to assess its condition.
Ukrhydroenergo assures that there is no threat of a breakthrough of the DneproHES dam after Russian missile attacks on the station.
General Director of Ukrhydroenergo Igor Sirota stated this on Radio Liberty.
According to him, the DneproGES received direct missile hits, and both its stations were hit – both GES-1 and GES-2.
“Today we are losing the station. The threat from a hit on GES-2 is unknown in what volume and with what power it will be able to operate after missile attacks. Because two missiles landed a direct hit on the Dnieper GES-2. Hit on a support. Crane beams are broken “That is, GES-2 is in critical condition. GES-1 is also not working now. We are now taking all measures to raise the gates and release water (to allow water to flow downstream of the Dnieper). Because we will not be able to process water through the station.” , – said Sirota.
According to him, Ukrhydroenergo will be able to give a final assessment of the situation within a day. Due to the ongoing firefighting efforts, it is not yet possible to assess everything.
“We cannot yet definitively assess what’s going on with the GES-2 station. What’s going on with the GES-1 station – we already understand the consequences; from the dam we understand what’s happening. I would like to say right away that there is no threat of a dam break,” Sirota emphasized .
He added that there were no casualties among DneproHES employees.
“I hope that the world will respond to the attacks that are again taking place on critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine. The insufficient reaction of the world community to the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station provoked the fact that the enemy did not see any great consequences for itself. And therefore, in the future, Russia continues to attack Ukrainian hydraulic structures. This a great danger that could lead to an environmental disaster,” said the general director of Ukrhydroenergo.
Impact on the DneproGES – what is known
As reported, in the morning it became known that after a powerful combined attack by the Russians at night, not only residential buildings were hit, but also a number of critical infrastructure facilities. Advisor to the mayor of Mariupol, Pyotr Andryushchenko, said that Russia hit the Dnieper hydroelectric power station dam. The Center for Countering Disinformation immediately responded, noting that they are already recording various fakes about the “destruction of the dam” launched by the enemy, as well as statements that “Ukraine will be completely left without electricity.” All this information is untrue, writes TsPD.
The Ministry of Energy stated that today’s attack by the invaders is the largest on the Ukrainian energy sector in recent times.
As you know, after today’s attack, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is also “on the verge of blackout.”
