Today, the Russian Federation looks more dangerous and unstable than at any time during the 24 years of Putin’s rule.
Just a week after Vladimir Putin won his fifth presidential term, Russia has descended into carnage and disorder. The horrific attack on the huge Crocus City Hall concert venue and shopping complex near Moscow, for which ISIS claimed responsibility, left hundreds of innocent people dead and injured. This is stated in the CNN material.
The publication recalls that, according to Russian authorities, four people suspected of committing the attack were detained near the Russian border with Ukraine. However, Putin said they planned to cross the border into Ukraine – Kyiv denies any connection to the attack and warns that Russia could use it as a reason to escalate its invasion.
“Amid fears of further attacks, security has been stepped up at key transport hubs across Russia. Public concerts and sporting events have been postponed. This is hardly the stability and security that so many Russians expected when they voted for President Putin,” the newspaper writes.
It is noted that for many years Putin was considered a leader capable of guaranteeing order “in this huge, turbulent country,” but today Russia looks more dangerous and unstable than at any time during Putin’s 24 years in power. At the same time, “attention is now focused on the apparent repetition in Russia of large-scale jihadist terrorist attacks that are not related to the war in Ukraine or internal confrontation with the Kremlin.”
“To make matters worse, in early March the US and other Western governments warned of … such an attack. US officials say they have been telling Russia about the intelligence for months. But for some reason Putin decided to ignore it, calling the warning “a provocation intended to intimidate and destabilize our society.” … For a leader who promised security and stability to Russians, a major attack on Russian soil is another powerful blow,” the publication states.
Terrorist attack in Moscow on March 22
On the evening of March 22, a large-scale terrorist attack occurred in Moscow. According to Russian media, unknown persons in camouflage opened fire from machine guns at visitors to the concert of the Picnic group.
The attack killed at least 133 people and injured another 154.
The terrorist organization ISIS subsequently claimed responsibility for the attack. At the same time, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin made an appeal in which he linked the terrorist attack with Ukraine and drew an analogy with the crimes of the Nazis during the Second World War.
