She warned that the result of the Russian war against Ukraine will shape not only the Euro-Atlantic, but also the global security order.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte called on Western countries to help Ukraine win and not be afraid of Russia’s defeat.
“The formula for victory over an aggressor is quite clear: peace through strength. If we mobilize our efforts and begin to believe in victory, we will be able to ensure peace in Europe, which will finally reign,” Simonyte said.
She noted that the total GDP of the Nordic and Baltic countries is higher than that of the Russian Federation, not to mention all 32 NATO and G7 member countries.
“The result of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine will shape not only the Euro-Atlantic, but also the global security order. World democracies will not be safe where a country with imperialist ambitions threatens its neighbors; where the mass atrocities of war remain unpunished; where the “Russian world” continues or freezes on its conditions of war-genocide,” said the Lithuanian Prime Minister.
In addition, she noted that the NATO summit in Washington in the summer will, among other things, be assessed on the commitment to bring Ukraine closer to the Alliance.
“Ukraine needs NATO just as NATO needs Ukraine. Future membership of Ukraine will significantly strengthen the military capabilities of the Alliance, since the Armed Forces of Ukraine are able to withstand a full-scale Russian invasion,” she expressed her conviction.
According to her, the scenario that was last year at the NATO summit in Vilnius, when Kyiv did not receive an invitation to the Alliance, should no longer be an option.
Lithuanian assistance to Ukraine
On March 20, Lithuania supported the Czech Republic’s initiative to purchase hundreds of thousands of artillery ammunition for the Ukrainian Armed Forces and is allocating money for this.
And on March 23, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis responded to the large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine on March 22. According to him, Western countries are mistaken when they do not provide Ukraine with sufficient weapons and air defense systems.
