March 27 according to the new style (April 9 according to the old style) is the day of remembrance of Matrona of Thessalonica, who lived in the 3rd-4th centuries and suffered for her faith.

Matrona of Thessalonica lived in Thessaloniki and was a slave of the Jewish woman Pautila. She forced her maid to renounce Christianity, but Matrona refused and suffered beatings. She was tied up and locked in a closet, but each time she was found without bonds and in prayer. In the end, the woman was severely beaten and died. Matrona was buried by Christians, and later Bishop Alexander of Thessaloniki built a church in the name of the martyr and transferred her miraculous relics there.
