Qualcomm sounds the alarm: ARM threatens to ban custom chips by 2025

October 31, 2022, 13:46

Countless modern chips are based on the ARM architecture. Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung Exynos and Google Tensor chipsets are no exception. The disturbing news comes from Qualcomm, which claims that ARM has “threatened at least one OEM” with the possibility of being “excluded from the market” for not being able to “get ARM compatible chips”. It is reported that ARM intends to move to a new licensing business model, ending the licensing of CPU technologies as a separate license.”

Tensor и Exynos под угрозой: ARM грозит запретить кастом-чипы

Thus, third-party manufacturers (like Samsung or Google) will be forced to purchase and use only related technologies (for example, graphics and neural modules) created by ARM. Otherwise, they risk losing access to ARM technologies. As a result, Google with its Tensor chips, for example, risks losing its TPU and NPU neuromodules from 2025, which are responsible for accelerating AI calculations. ARM, in turn, declares Qualcomm’s claims “riddled with inaccuracies” and soon promises to issue a detailed explanation.
