Sony and Honda plan to install the PlayStation 5 in their future autonomous electric car

Sony’s Honda Mobility joint venture is considering including the PlayStation 5 in its upcoming entertainment-focused electric vehicle.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Izumi Kawanishi, president of the joint venture, said it is “technologically possible” for Sony to integrate the PlayStation 5 platform into a car it plans to build with Honda.

Tesla began shipping its latest Model S and X electric cars with larger horizontal screens last year and equipped them with AMD’s RDNA 2 graphics chip, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk said during the demo is “literally on par with the PlayStation 5.” More than a year after Musk’s promise, big games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Steam demos in August have yet to be fulfilled, with the most notable game slated to be added being the original 2D Sonic the Hedgehog.

But Sony doesn’t just want to bring gaming into a car like Tesla. The plan is to “develop the car as entertainment hardware,” said Yasuhide Mizuno, chairman of Sony Honda Mobility and senior director of Honda Motor Co. In fact, the electric car will be a “device for consuming content on wheels.”

Other plans from Sony and Honda Mobility involve making the car autonomous.

“In order to enjoy the space of the car, you need to give yourself the opportunity not to drive it,” Kavanishi said, and admitted that it will take a lot of time.

This is a key reason why Sony and Honda joined forces earlier this year. The former offers not only entertainment and software, but also the sensors and technology needed for autonomous driving, while Honda is apparently good at building cars. Together, they hope to catch up with other automakers’ systems, such as Tesla’s fully self-driving system, whose beta versions are currently running on more than 160,000 cars.

But Tesla has its own problems launching autonomous systems. And in general, the ambitious plans for the autonomy of many automobile companies have not yet been fully realized.

The US Ministry of Justice launched an investigation into Tesla — after a dozen road accidents, including fatal ones involving its autopilot

God of War Ragnarök is still years away from the launch of Sony and Honda’s automotive lineup, as the companies plan to make the first deliveries of their vehicle to North America in early 2026. Sony hinted at what the upcoming model might look like in 2020, showing off the Vision-S 01 and SUV 02 concepts at CES 2022.

The Vision-S was created in conjunction with the car manufacturer Magna and had twin 200 kW motors that could accelerate the car to 96 kilometers per hour in 4.5 seconds. Sony placed more than 10 image sensors on the vehicle, as well as leaders, radars and ultrasound. Nine displays are also built into the car.

Sony and Honda are betting that their first autonomous electric vehicle for entertainment will be a great choice in the automotive space. It follows the trend of other automakers trying to get owners to spend more time in their cars. Such as the Hyundai Ioniq 6 with its “personal space where you can relax and recharge”, Tesla with Netflix since 2019 and later with TikTok, and Lincoln’s Star concept, which can create mood fragrances.

Previously, the BMW Group announced a partnership with AirConsole to launch casual games in its cars as early as 2023. To use the cloud game service in the machines, you will not need to connect game controllers – all the functions will be taken over by an ordinary smartphone.
