The Witcher 3 next-gen update will be released on December 14. CD Projekt Red has already shown the gameplay of the next-gen version, but more details can always be found. Source Analyst De Bits has shed some more light on what to expect from The Witcher 3’s PS5 graphics update by comparing images on different versions of Sony’s console.
The good news is that The Witcher 3 on PS5 clearly looks a lot better than it did on PS4, with noticeably better lighting, reflections, shadows and a host of other improvements. The loading time of the game has decreased almost tenfold. However, the ray tracing mode only allows you to play at a relatively low resolution with a frequency drop of up to 30 fps.
The next-gen patch for The Witcher 3 on PS5 includes two visual modes – ray tracing and quality. Ray tracing mode offers a dynamic resolution of 1440p, with an average resolution not much higher than 1080p (around 1188p). Ray-tracing mode targets 30 fps, but in busy areas such as cities, there can be frequent judder drops of 1-3 frames. However, the actual gameplay still feels smooth. As for the Productivity mode, it’s dynamic (very dynamic) 4K, with the most frequent resolution only around 1548p. Performance in this mode is also not ideal – at a frequency of 60 k/s there are drops to 50 k/s.

There’s no denying that the next-gen version of The Witcher 3 looks better than the original, but reviewers feel that a few more visual options could have been added. One of them could be an average graphics mode with a stable frequency of 30/40 fps without ray tracing, which would bring the resolution closer to real 4K.
Ukrainian users are dissatisfied with the lack of Ukrainian localization in the update of the third “The Witcher” and other releases of CD Projekt Red – such as the upcoming story add-on for Cyberpunk 2077 (the outrage also applies to the unconfirmed presence of Russian localization in the latter). Activists call for a boycott of the company.

Such statements look somewhat strange in relation to a game that was released 7 years ago and has been supported for a long time solely by the enthusiasm and will of the manufacturer. At the same time, CD Projekt Red conducts free internships for Ukrainian students, and also refused to work in the markets of Russia and Belarus. It is also worth noting that there are a huge number of games and other cultural works that have not been translated into Ukrainian, and constructive work consists in dialogue with their publishers and efforts aimed at creating a translation.
In addition to enhanced graphics, the next-gen update for The Witcher 3 on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 will add elements inspired by the Netflix series, quests, and other gameplay features. A day before its official release, the next-gen version of Witcher 3 scored 97 points on Metacritic based on 12 critics.
