The administration of US President Joe Biden plans to transfer to Ukraine modern electronic equipment that transforms unguided free-falling aviation munitions into “smart bombs” capable of hitting the positions of Russian troops with high precision. This was reported by The Washington Post resource with reference to high-ranking US officials familiar with the matter.

These are JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) kits. They include global positioning devices to ensure high accuracy of hitting and can be attached to various ammunition. Such a kit consists of wings that are attached to the middle part of the bomb and a tail unit that has controllable tails that allow the bomb to maneuver. There is a computer with navigation equipment.

Bombs equipped with the JDAM package are guided to their target by an integrated inertial guidance system paired with a precision-enhanced GPS receiver, providing a range of 15 nautical miles (28 km) from the drop point (the range increases when dropped from high altitudes at supersonic speeds). The size of the probable circular deviation shown in the tests is 11 meters. The US military has used this technology on bombs weighing up to 2,000 pounds (907 kg), usually on bombers and fighter jets.

So far, little is known about the transfer of JDAM kits. It is not entirely clear whether President Biden or any of his national security advisers have approved the proposed transfer. It is also unknown whether the Ukrainian forces will use the kits on aircraft or ground types of weapons, or if any specific systems in the Ukrainian arsenal will be candidates for such reinforcement.
