“It’s a lot of stress and we’re still a long way from robotaxis” – Marquez Brownlee about Tesla’s latest FSD autopilot, which is still in beta [Видео]

The famous YouTuber Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, has released a new video about Tesla – this time the technoblogger decided to test the Tesla FSD ADAS system to evaluate its capabilities. The title of this video fully reveals its content: Tesla Self Driving vs Everyday Roads!

This is not the first such video specifically about Tesla FSD – the current version of the package, which has been tested since 2020 and should one day pump the company’s Autopilot from the current second to the highest level five, making all Tesla cars fully autonomous, according to Elon Musk’s plan. If you remember, at the end of 2021, a pirated version of Tesla FSD (now the system is officially available only in the USA and Canada to a limited number of testers) was tested in the center of Kyiv. What is interesting about the new video from Brownlee? First, in the frame is the Tesla Model S Plaid flagship sedan with a loud steering wheel. In other words, this is a demonstration of the capabilities of today’s top hardware and software platform Tesla FSD. During the trip to New Jersey, driving on expressways and city roads, Marcus tried to minimize interference, but the system still failed in several situations.

Those interested can watch the full video below, and we, in turn, will only highlight the brightest moments and interesting facts:

  • At the very beginning (0:59), the system “frightened” a van moving in the opposite lane and stopped the car – Brownlee notes that it is usually necessary to intervene precisely because of the indecision and delay of automation.
  • When leaving the highway (4:03), the car immediately wedged into the third lane, although the computer initially aimed for the second row. According to Brownlee, in general, the system drives very cautiously – like an insecure novice driver.
  • At 4:46, 8:03, and 10:45 p.m., you can see the new user interface nearby in fine detail – the information display on the dashboard displays everything that comes into the field of view of the built-in cameras and sensors. The system clearly and clearly visualizes everything around – the number of lanes, other cars, pedestrians, signs, etc.
  • At 5:30, attention is drawn to the camera, which monitors the driver’s vigilance and keeps a close eye on the road – the camera detects if the driver stops following the road, first sounds an audible warning, and then forcibly disables Autopilot.
  • At 5:47, Brownlee intervened for the first time since the beginning of the route and intercepted control – the system failed. Restrictive signs regarding the repair of the area prevented him from changing lanes in time.
  • In the current version of Tesla FSD, there are three driving profiles with the names: Average, Chill, Assertive (Normal, Calm/Intelligent and Crazy).
  • As before, on expressways with clear road markings, the system feels much more confident than on city streets with heavier traffic.
  • In 2021, Tesla ditched radars for Autopilot entirely in favor of cameras (Tesla Vision) – Brownlee noted that the ride was in simple conditions and doubted that there would be any difficulty in conditions of snow, fog or rain with very limited visibility.
  • At 2:14 p.m., the Tesla FSD system performed a sharp maneuver to move into the far right lane and slightly clipped the car that was moving along behind.
  • By 4:05 p.m., the system failed again, and Marcus had to make an emergency stop at the toll booth.
  • At 21:31, Marcus Brownlee intervened for the third time – the beta version of the Tesla FSD system went haywire after the truck made an emergency stop in the middle of the road.
  • After arriving at the destination, the Tesla FSD attempted to park, but Brownlee eventually lost control and took control.

During the ride, Marcus Brownlee remarked that it was a lot of stress to drive with Tesla’s FSD system activated, which is still in beta testing, and that given the way Tesla’s Autopilot drives now, he would never dare sit in the back seat. because he does not feel safe. According to Brownlee, the robotaxi, which Elon Musk has been dreaming about for a long time and which they initially wanted to launch in 2020, is still a long way off – in fact, this demonstration is clearly visible. At the same time, it is impressive how well the built-in cameras and sensors see what is happening around.

Tesla now aims to launch its robot in 2024 – Musk previously said that it would be “cheaper than a bus ticket”. At the same time, Tesla has enough problems with regulators — the company is now the subject of several investigations, including numerous accidents involving parked special vehicles. At the end of October, the US Department of Justice launched a new investigation into Tesla — after a dozen road accidents, including fatal ones, involving its autopilot. And recently, the US court obliged Tesla to modernize the client’s car at its own expense due to “deceptive advertising” of a full-fledged autopilot and provide him with Full Self-Driving at no additional cost. It can become a judicial precedent and be used to make decisions in similar cases, there are quite a few now.
