Amber Heard said Monday that she has agreed to “settle” defamation lawsuits brought by Johnny Depp, ending years of legal battles over their rocky marriage.
In a message on Instagram, Amber writes that the decision was “difficult” for her and was followed by “great discussions.” The actress adds that it should not be assumed that she “made concessions”.
In 2022, Depp and Heard sued each other for defamation – each claimed to have been abused during a 5-year relationship, almost 2 years of which were officially married. The six-week trial was televised and accompanied by vivid and not very pleasant testimony from the stars.

Heard claimed that Depp repeatedly assaulted her, strangled her and once raped her with a liquor bottle. She often cried during her testimony. Meanwhile, the actor said that Amber was the abuser in the relationship, and he tried to back off every time she started being violent. The couple provided audio recordings of the altercation to corroborate their accounts.
In June, the court ruled that Heard defamed Depp and ordered her to pay her ex-husband a total of about $15 million. The actor himself was ordered to pay Heard $2 million.
In her message, Heard also said she had lost faith in the American legal system and believed the UK legal system was more “reliable, impartial and fair”. The actress also criticized the US media, saying they prioritize “popularity and power” over “direct evidence”.
“I suffered such humiliation that I cannot survive. Even if my appeal in the US is successful, the best outcome would be a retrial. I just can’t go through it a third time,” Hurd says.
Lawyers Ben Chu and Camilla Vazquez said that the actor will receive a payment of $1 million from the insurance companies of the actress, Johnny in turn promised to donate funds to charity.
“We are pleased to officially close the door on this painful chapter for Mr. Depp, who throughout the process has clearly demonstrated his intention to prove the truth,” the attorneys said.
Earlier, Google announced that Johnny Depp was the most searched person in 2022. Amber Heard took third place in the category.
