Amazon is working on an adaptation of the Tomb Raider franchise – The Hollywood Reporter claims that Phoebe Waller-Bridge will write the script for the series, and Deadline adds that the studio is also working on a film.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Trash,” “Killing Eve”) will serve as the show’s writer and executive producer, but she’s unlikely to play any of the characters.
The series and film could become a bigger film franchise than the God of War adaptation announced in December. Along with that, Amazon will release the next Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics.
In recent years, filmmakers have increasingly taken up the adaptation of video games: Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series has become a hit, and HBO’s The Last of Us has already been renewed for a second season after only two episodes.

Tomb Raider adaptations will have to compete with many other video games in development. Netflix is making Horizon Zero Dawn, Peacock is developing Twisted Metal, and Sony’s Gran Turismo is set to premiere on August 11.
Netflix is also working on an anime version of Tomb Raider with Powerhouse, the studio that animated Castlevania. In it, Hayley Atwell, the actress who played Peggy Carter in various Marvel projects, will voice Lara Croft.
Earlier, MGM lost the rights to make tomb robber films after the film starring Alicia Vikander failed at the box office (the film grossed about $274 million worldwide).
Before that, the role of Lara Croft was played by Angelina Jolie, who starred in two films at once: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider 2 – Cradle of Life (2003). Blockbusters of the Paramount studio collected 432 million dollars at the box office.
