Samsung Galaxy Fold foldable phones have come a long way from the first version of the device to the Fold4. However, a significant number of owners of the previous generation of smartphones, the Fold3, report cracks and breakage of the screen along the fold line. In addition, dead pixels appear on the folding screen. All of this appears to be due to wear and tear less than two years after release.
Samsung’s Twitter and Reddit communities are filled with reports of problems with the Galaxy Fold3’s screen, from cracks to thick black lines that appear in the folds and gradually grow. Almost all users say that these problems were not caused by accidental drops, shock damage or rough handling.
Samsung has said that the Galaxy Fold3, released in August 2021, will be able to be folded 200,000 times, which is equivalent to 100 folds per day for five years. But many owners claim that this is far from the case. One of the victims claims on Reddit that he only opened his phone 2-3 times a week. As a result, his phone cracked along the fold line after 15 months of careful ownership. Other users claim that Samsung is asking $800 for out-of-warranty device repairs in similar cases.

Even smartphones that fail within the warranty period can end up costing users dearly – if Samsung decides that the failure was not the result of a software defect or a hardware defect. One victim’s Fold3 screen developed a bend crack in just three months, but the company asked for $700 for repairs – claiming it showed signs of a fall that didn’t actually happen.

Early reviewers discovered screen issues with the original Galaxy Fold even before it launched, causing Samsung to delay the release for several months. While conventional smartphones are relatively durable these days, sophisticated devices remain more fragile.
