Director Brian Taylor to Direct Another Hellboy Reboot with Original Comic Book Writer Mike Mignola

Almost two decades after the release of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy, the character’s story will get another reboot. Millennium Media has confirmed that Hellboy: The Hunchback will open next month in Bulgaria. The lead actor (originally played by Ron Perlman) has not yet been announced, but the new film will be directed by Brian Taylor, best known for the action movie “Crank” with Jason Statham.

Interestingly, original comic book creator Mike Mignola wrote the script for the upcoming film alongside Chris Golden. The two were rumored to be working on the script for the 2019 reboot, though Andrew Cosby ended up being the sole screenwriter. The 2019 reboot was poorly received and was a commercial failure, grossing around $55 million at the box office on a $50 million budget.

“The Hunchback is a departure from all of the previous Hellboy films, where Mike Mignola and the comic book creator will finally present a true version of their stories and characters,” said Millennium Media President Jeffrey Greenstein. “This is the first film in a series that will captivate audiences in familiar (and new) ways.”

The title of the new movie Crooked Man comes from the title of the 2008 comic book. The website Deadline published a brief plot guide for the film:

“In the new film, we will see Hellboy and a rookie agent who find themselves in the Appalachian countryside of the 1950s. There, they discover a small community of witches, led by some sort of devil with an unsavory connection to Hellboy’s past: The Hunchback.”

The release date of the film remains unknown.
