A possible cause of Ryzen 7000 burnout is overvoltage during AMD EXPO memory overclocking. MSI, ASUS and Gigabyte have already released new versions of UEFI

The failure of AMD Ryzen 7800X3D processors and other chips with 3D V-Cache prompted manufacturers to look for a solution to the problem. Motherboard makers are removing problematic BIOS versions, some have already released fixed firmware versions in cooperation with AMD. At the same time, overclocker Der8auer discovered a similar malfunction in the case of the Ryzen 9 7900X (without X3D).

MSI’s BIOS update limits the 7000X3D’s voltage – only downwards are available. At the same time, there have been no reports of failure of MSI boards and processors on them. The company published a Reddit post addressing the issue:

New AM5 series motherboard BIOS implements CPU voltage restrictions for 7000X3D Series CPUs

Failure of processors was observed mainly on ASUS and Gigabyte boards. Both manufacturers also released updates and closed access to older BIOS versions. ASUS published a statement on the problem: the use of AMD EXPO memory overclocking profiles and a change in SoC voltage are indicated as a possible cause of the failure.

Igor’s LAB notes that the blown pins are part of the VDDCR voltage bus that supplies power to the core. However, their failure is a consequence of the problem, as is the swelling of the corresponding area.

The researchers also pointed out that the problem is related to the use of EXPO profiles. The bad news is that using them is considered overclocking and may void your warranty. However, ASUS offered at least one of the users to replace the processor and motherboard.

The more general nature of the problem was confirmed by Der8auer, who was involved in its discovery. He closely examined his own Ryzen 9 7900X processor (not X3D) and found the same bulge. This means that the problem may also affect the X series of chips, although there have been no reports of other similar cases.

One of the commenters of the Igor’sLAB post formulated a guess about the causes of the problem:

This is due to the EXPO parameters specified by AMD. ASUS and Gigabyte implemented them one at a time, ignoring the new CCD X3D. While the X processors can withstand higher voltages [хотя, как показано выше, не все – ред.]X3Ds “die” one by one due to higher sensitivity.

As soon as the EXPO profile is enabled, the CPU SOC and CPU VDDIO/MC voltages increase to 1.36-1.4V, sometimes up to 1.5V on Windows, resulting in instant “death” of X3D. If you set all the voltages to the correct values manually, there will be no problems.”

AMD is currently investigating the malfunction, an official statement from the company is likely to follow later.

The AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor burned and damaged the board, this is not an isolated case
