Why ‘First Lady’ Carrie Johnson doesn’t deserve this vicious, sexist pile-on

Yet it was ever thus. Back in 1993, before she ascended to the House of Lords as Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws, Helena Kennedy QC penned Eve Was Framed, a searing critique of the humiliations women endure in the British legal system. She vividly described the prejudices, misconceptions and toxic sexism they faced. We would all like to think we’ve evolved but three decades later proceedings in the dock of public opinion are no different; women castigated for the misdeeds of their menfolk. And often judged far more harshly for them.

Carrie may not be entirely free of fault – but every character failing, every fatal flaw of Boris’s was visibly present (from outer space) long before she came along.

Yet we are told she has “undue influence”, he is “in her thrall”, and “scared of her”. Really? I mean, really? Carrie is 33 and raising two small children full time. If she still has the energy left to run the country behind closed doors, good luck to her.

Boris, 57, has been married three times and has somewhere in the region of seven children. His USP was that he was such marvellous fun nobody minded his dissembling, his obfuscations – until matters got serious. Yet in First Lady, a close friend is quoted as saying “Carrie is the reason Boris has squandered the chance to become a great Prime Minister”.

It’s only a hunch and I’m just putting it out there, but could it be that the aforementioned friend was a man?
