Our phones are coming between us – it’s time to call it a day

And because of this, my break-up with my phone is having to take place in stages. First, the removal of apps like Instagram from my home screen, so I have to make a real effort to get to them. I have deleted my Twitter account completely. Next, the switching off of notifications. What apps I do have, I have tried to ensure are reasonably healthy ones: The Language of Letting Go app, for example, which provides daily meditations to read, and Insight Timer, which features free talks on psychology. My phone goes off at 7pm, and I try not to turn it on again until I have dropped my daughter at school the next day.

This may seem over the top, and certainly, my husband seems to have no intention of breaking up with his phone. But I can’t expect him to tackle his technoference if I can’t be bothered to deal with my own. And every time I go to reach for my phone in my pocket, I will try to remember this: that life is about looking up and out, not down and in.

Join me for my 10k challenge and learn to love exercise like I have

When I was a kid, I hated exercise, it reminding me of PE and not being picked for the netball team. As a woman in my twenties, it was all about punishment and staying slim. But in my thirties, I discovered that exercise could be about the gains, not the losses – the space it gave me from my obsessive thoughts, the endorphins it produced completely naturally – and that was when my relationship with it changed completely. I exercise now for my mental health, and any physical benefits are a bonus.

Regular readers will know that in 2018, I ran my second London Marathon, in only my underwear, to show that exercise belongs to everyone, whatever their body shape. That bonkers endeavour led to me setting up Celebrate You with the team behind the London Marathon – a wave of the Vitality London 10,000, where people can run or walk the 10k course for their heads and their hearts, and not race it for a personal best. It’s about getting out and coming together, and this year, after the pandemic, we hope to do that in massive fashion on May 2.

The good news is, you can wear whatever you want on the day – and if you can’t make it to London, you can do it virtually, with friends, where you live. And to mark the occasion, this column is offering 10 readers a free place at the Vitality London 10,000 on Monday May 2 (or the virtual, if preferred), as well as a pair of NB 1080 trainers (RRP £135) from New Balance, the official kit suppliers on the day. The winners will also receive two online training sessions with me and a leading running coach in the buildup to the event. To enter, simply fill in the form below – you have until midnight on Thursday, Feb 17. Please note travel and accommodation is not provided.
