The airplane blockbuster starring the ageless Tom Cruise continues to break records and climb the box office ratings. This time, Top Gun: Maverick managed to score an important psychological victory over the disaster film Titanic (1997), taking it away from it at number seven in the home gross rankings.
So, at the moment, Top Gun: Maverick has grossed $662.5 million in the US home market, while Titanic has only $659.3 million. More importantly, overtaking the disaster film, Tom Cruise’s creation became Paramount’s most successful film in its entire 110-year history, displacing Titanic from this position.
Top Gun: Maverick has only six competitors ahead of them, these are Avengers: Infinity War ($678 million), Black Panther ($700 million), Avatar ($760 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($804 million), Avengers: Endgame ($858 million) and Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens ($936 million). It is significant that all these films are superhero and space fiction produced by the studios of The Walt Disney Company.
If we talk about world fees, then the situation with Top Gun: Maverick is somewhat worse – the film takes only 13th place with a very significant margin from the first place. So, the total fees of the sequel “Top Gun” are $ 1.352 billion, while the leading “Avatar” has twice as much – $ 2.847 billion.
Top Gun: Maverick also became the first Tom Cruise film to gross over $100 million in its opening weekend and over $1 billion at the worldwide box office .
