The timeline of House of the Dragon is much wider than the narrative of Game of Thrones. The backstory of the events dedicated to the Targaryens is based on the book Fire and Blood by George Martin, a saga about the ruling clan of white-haired dragonriders in Westeros.
“House of the Dragon” focuses on the feud within House Targaryen, culminating in a series of tragic events soaked in fire and blood, dubbed the “Dance of the Dragons”.
At the heart of the Targaryen feud is the issue of succession to the throne. Contrary to patriarchal custom, Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine), who had no male heirs, appointed his only daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) as his successor.
Not everyone in the Seven Kingdoms agrees with Rhaenyra’s ascension to the Iron Throne – especially her uncle Damon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and her childhood friend Lady Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).
The Westeros calendar in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon is determined by a turning point in the history of the continent – the conquest of Aegon Targaryen, who united the Seven Kingdoms. Years here are counted from Aegon’s Conquest (SE).
House of the Dragon takes place roughly 100 years after the E.E., at the end of the remarkably peaceful, almost 60-year reign of Viserys’ predecessor, King Jaehaerys I. The “Dance of the Dragons,” a series of violent conflicts that reshaped Westeros, will take place in 129-131 Z.E. House of the Dragon explores the nearly three decades leading up to the Targaryen’s collapse.
George Martin says that the House of the Dragon timeline spans about 28 years before the start of the Dance of the Dragons in 129 ZE. In A.D. 101 during the Great Council, Viserys was named the successor to King Jaehaerys. The old king dies in 103 AC.
The House of the Dragon then moves on to the ninth year of King Viserys, about 112 BC. At that time, the beloved daughter of Viserys, Princess Rainier, was about 15 years old (at this age she is played by Millie Alcock).
It is unknown how many years House of the Dragon season 1 will cover. Since the series is scheduled for more seasons, it is unlikely that the viewer will see the height of the war in it. However, young Rainier and Alycent (played by Emily Carey) will make way for their older counterparts very soon. There are many Targaryens and their dragons that need to be fully presented to the viewer.
Game of Thrones begins in 298 AC, a few years before Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) puts forward a claim to the Iron Throne. So Game of Thrones takes place roughly 197 years after House of the Dragon began, and 167 years after Dance of the Dragons ended. Given that most of the characters on Game of Thrones are mortals, don’t expect familiar faces to appear.
