Streaming service Hulu, which has just successfully revived the Predator franchise, will be reimagining Clive Barker’s 1987 horror cult film Hellraiser ahead of Halloween.
In the first teaser of the new Hellraiser, there are no such scenes that could be colorfully described. The face of the Hell Priest, better known as Pinhead, shows through the blood-red letters of the film’s title. Of the useful information, the teaser contains only the R rating designation and the release date on television screens.
Hellraiser fans enjoyed the first movie about the sadomasochistic extra-dimensional creatures known as the Cenobites, endured the second, and survived eight more sequels. The prospect of a new reading of Barker’s story will bring hellish torment to many of them, and will definitely bring pleasure to someone.
The new film is being directed by David Bruckner, who has previously directed The Night House, The Siren and The Ritual. His frequent collaborators Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski wrote the screenplay from a story by David S. Goyer.
Pinhead will be played by transgender actress Jamie Clayton (Sense 8, Sex and Another City: Generation Q). She replaced Doug Bradley, who played the iconic role in eight Hellraiser films, and Stephan Smith Collins and Paul T. Taylor, who played Pinhead in Hellraiser: Revelations and Hellraiser: Judgment.
Hellraiser will focus on a young woman who struggles with addiction – played by Odessa A’tzion. According to 20th Century Studios’ plot description, she receives a branded puzzle box, unaware that she will summon the Cenobites.
The original Hellraiser was based on Barker’s novella Heart Bound by Hell and directed by the author himself. Barker’s original story and film adaptation focuses on Frank Cotton, a sadomasochist who escapes from the hellish realm of the Cenobites. He instructs his ex-lover to rebuild his tattered body, Frank, using the flesh and blood of the murder victims. When Frank’s niece, Kirsty, accidentally summons Pinhead, the Cenobite leader learns of her uncle’s escape and negotiates with her for the return of his wayward captive.
The new version of Hellraiser will be released on October 7 as a Hulu exclusive.
