Google has made a nice gift to educators in Ukraine on World Teachers’ Day, which is celebrated on October 5: the American technology giant is increasing assistance for existing applications – the volume of Chromebook laptops is increasing from the initial 43 thousand to 50 thousand – and is launching several new initiatives.
Chromebook for schools
In May, Google, as part of one of its charitable initiatives, promised to purchase and send 43,000 Chromebook laptops for Ukrainian teachers at its own expense so that they can continue to communicate and collaborate with their students, wherever they are now. Since then, the challenges for many teachers have become even more tangible, and this school year began with more than 40% of Ukrainian schools providing online classes for an increasing number of temporarily displaced and traumatized children. Given this, Google is increasing the amount of assistance – instead of 43 thousand Chromebooks, Ukrainian teachers will receive 50 thousand. Actually, these laptops have already begun to arrive – the first to receive teachers from the Dnipro region, and in the coming weeks they will be distributed throughout the country.
Google Workspace for Education for higher education institutions and students
Google has given 250 universities and colleges six months of free access to premium Google Workspace for Education features. These features support higher education online learning by allowing universities to hold meetings for up to 250 students and record them to Drive.
Support for teachers in Ukraine
The IT giant, through its Google.org charity arm, will provide €1.2 million to UNESCO to help 50,000 teachers in Ukraine acquire psychosocial skills to support the mental health of their students. This assistance is part of the overall support provided by Google.org and Google employees in the amount of more than $40 million in cash assistance and $5,000,000 in donations for humanitarian projects.
Refresher courses
To help Ukrainian teachers adapt to teaching exclusively online, Google is partnering with local organizations to deliver learning through a series of workshops and online materials , specifically Google Workspace for Education. The company recently increased the number of places in the program – by June 2023, not 50,000, but 200,000 teachers will be trained.
