Iran’s Nuclear Control Authority said its mail servers had been “infiltrated” by an unknown group of hackers from another country.
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) reported on its website that a series of emails from the IT division of its subsidiary Nuclear Energy Production and Development Co. posted online without permission. The organization “promptly” launched an internal investigation.
A little earlier, the Black Reward group made a number of publications on Twitter and on their Telegram channel. The publications noted that the group hacked AEOI as part of a campaign to support the anti-government protests sweeping Iran.
The published materials contained many links to e-mail correspondence, which, according to Black Reward, concerned the UN International Atomic Energy Agency, foreign contracts and the Iranian nuclear power plant in Bushehr. In its statement, AEOI did not mention Black Reward and said the emails contained “normal day-to-day exchanges” and dealt with “technical issues.”
Iran’s nuclear program has been a major factor in tensions with the West for almost 20 years. Indirect talks between Iran and the US to revive the 2015 nuclear deal aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief remain suspended.
The European Union imposed new sanctions on Iran last week in response to the Islamic Republic’s brutal crackdown on protests and reports of Iran supplying drones to the Russian regime for the war in Ukraine.
