On Friday, the US Republican National Committee filed a lawsuit in California’s Eastern District Court. The complaint accuses Google of spamming millions of RNC mailing campaign emails.
“At about the same time at the end of each month, Google spams nearly all RNC emails. It is critical and suspicious that this end of the month has historically been the RNC’s most successful fundraising period.
The lawsuit was filed after Google launched a controversial program to appease GOP lawmakers concerned about its filtering rules. In June, a study found that Gmail was more likely than competing email clients to filter email from Republican emails.
The company said it will work with the Federal Election Commission to prevent political messages from falling into spam. The concession came after Republican lawmakers introduced a bill that would ban email platforms from using algorithms to automatically route political campaign messages.
However, the Republican National Committee does not appear to be taking advantage of the Google program created to solve the party’s problem. However, the party never took part in the pilot project, nor is it mentioned in the lawsuit.
Google claims that they do not filter emails by political affiliation at all. Gmail spam filters reflect the actions of users who block such letters on their own – on this basis, the filter places certain messages in spam.
