In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Age of Empires, Microsoft has made several announcements related to the series.
First, the newest game in the series – Age of Empires IV – will be released on consoles next year. Initially, its release took place on October 28, 2021 on the PC platform. In 2023, it will launch on Day 1 on Xbox Game Pass and will be playable via Xbox Cloud Gaming for those who prefer portable devices. The Age of Empires IV console port is getting some expected features, including a tutorial to help gamers get used to the new controller layout, additional multiplayer between PC and Xbox players, and full keyboard and mouse support.
Secondly, fans are waiting for the release of Age of Empires on mobile devices. World’s Edge and Xbox Game Studios have announced that Age of Empires will be coming to iOS and Android. This will not be the first appearance of Age of Empires on mobile devices. In 2015, Age of Empires: Castle Siege (in the tower defense genre) and Age of Empires: World Domination (real-time strategy) were released. Both games were short-lived: Castle Siege closed after four years, and World Domination after just one. The new mobile version of Age of Empires should be the most accurate adaptation for mobile devices.
In addition, Microsoft announced Age of Mythology: Retold, a remaster of the original 2002 strategy game. The game will be released on PC (tentative date is not known) and will receive improved gameplay, updated graphics and other innovations.
Additionally, it was announced that Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will be released on Xbox Series X|S on January 31, 2023.
