After months of searching for new DC Studios executives, Discovery-owned Warner Bros placed director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran in charge of the studio’s creative and financial direction.
At one point it looked like Warner Bros was eyeing Dan Lin as the head of DC, but today the company’s CEO, David Zaslav, announced the decision to appoint Gunn and Safran, both of whom will simultaneously be the division’s CEO, overseeing all of its film and television projects. . In his statement, Zaslav expressed his confidence in Gunn and Safran’s unique, complementary talents and his excitement that they will shape the future of the MCU.
Warner Bros’ plan for DC Studios is for Gunn to lead the division’s creative vision and for Safran to handle production and finance. Gunn and Safran will report to Zaslav and will continue directing and producing in addition to their management duties – the agreement with them was concluded for four years.
Interestingly, according to the agreement, Gunn will be required to work exclusively with DC. It seems that even the illusory hope that the director will continue to be involved in the Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in any way is disappearing.
In the summer of 2018, Marvel Studios fired Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 for offensive tweets from 2008-2011. Although a few months later, Marvel eventually brought Gunn back into the project (the movie has already been filmed and will release in 2023 ).
The collaboration with Marvel continued until Warner Bros (which at the time had not yet been taken over by Discovery) brought the director on board to direct the reboot of The Suicide Squad . The success of the tape created the possibility of a spinoff – the series “Peacemaker” and, most likely, influenced today’s decision.
In their statement of responsibility for the future of the DC Universe, Gunn and Safran indicated that they were interested in creating an “integrated multi-layered universe” project that “still allows for the individual expression of the directors involved in the project.”
