An image of the Pillars of Creation captured by MIRI, the James Webb Telescope’s mid-infrared camera, will help researchers better understand how stars form.
NASA has released another image of the Pillars of Creation taken by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). While the image released by the agency last week provides a detailed overview of the stars forming in the region, the latest photo is even more delightful and…disturbing.

The eerie orange-and-black image captured by Webb’s Mid-Infrared Radiation Instrument (MIRI) is certainly timely, given that it’s days before Halloween. NASA says the image provides a new perspective on the Pillars of Creation, focusing specifically on the region’s gas and dust.

The image last week was taken with the Webb Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam), which was able to view thousands of new stars through pillars of dust – more than ever before . However, many objects are not bright enough to be visible at the wavelengths that MIRI focuses on.
NASA says the image is providing astronomers with higher resolution mid-infrared light data than was available in the past. The agency notes that the researchers will study the exact movements of the dust to form a more complete 3D landscape of the Pillars of Creation.
The Pillars of Creation are in the Eagle Nebula, about 6,500 light-years away. If you’re wondering how huge this object is, look at the bright star protruding from the right side of the top pillar. NASA says the star and its dusty environment is larger than our solar system.

Hubble has also photographed the Pillars of Creation – the first time this happened in 1995, but then the technology made it possible to detect only a fraction of the stars in the region. The photograph was composed of 32 individual shots taken by four cameras, including a wide-angle camera and a #2 planetary camera. The photograph captured the light emitted by various chemical elements in the cloud, which are depicted in different colors in the composite photo: green indicates hydrogen, red indicates singly ionized sulfur, and blue indicates doubly ionized oxygen atoms.
In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Hubble space launch, a new image of the Pillars of Creation was taken – larger and in higher resolution. The image was taken with the Wide Angle Camera #3 installed on the telescope in 2009. The 2014 re-work provides more detail, but the visible-light shot still left the pillars relatively opaque and obscured some forming stars.
