PlayStation VR2 Goes on Sale Feb. 22 for $550 - New Sony Headset Pre-Orders Start Nov. 15

Sony’s next VR headset, PSVR2, will be available early next year. This is a major upgrade of the previous version – with an OLED screen and a 110-degree viewing angle.

Sony will release its PSVR2 headset on February 22, 2023. The headset will retail for $549.99 in the US, €599.99 in Europe, £529.99 in the UK and 74,980 yen in Japan.

The VR headset itself will include Sense controllers and stereo headphones, but the controller charging station will be available separately for $49.99 (€49.99/£39.99/5480 yen).

Pre-orders for PSVR2 will begin on November 15, exclusively on the Sony PlayStation online store in many markets including the US, UK, France and Germany. The games, specifically Horizon Call of the Mountain, will also be available for pre-order later this month.

The PSVR2 headset has been significantly upgraded from the original with an OLED screen, 110-degree viewing angle and 4K HDR support. It also delivers up to 120Hz for smoother frame rates and gameplay.

The second-generation headset has four cameras built into the front of the display, so users don’t have to set up external cameras to track movements.

The new PSVR2 Sense controllers have a spherical shape, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback similar to DualSense, and can also recognize finger touches.

“We created the PSVR2 headset with comfort in mind, in a thinner and lighter design than our previous headset. We’ve also included a built-in air vent for extra airflow and a lens adjustment dial for personalization,” says Isabelle Tomatis, VP of Brand, Hardware and Peripherals at Sony Interactive Entertainment Entertainment.

However, the new generation headset will not be able to play original PSVR games.

“PSVR games are not compatible with the new headset as PSVR2 is designed to deliver a true next-generation VR experience,” explained Hideaki Nishino, Sony Senior Vice President of Platform Capabilities, earlier.

There are currently around 500 games available for PSVR, while Sony has just announced a handful for PSVR2, adding 11 more to the list.

Horizon Call of the Mountain (a game in the same universe as Zero Dawn and Forbidden West) looks set to be a launch game alongside the VR versions of Resident Evil 8, Resident Evil 4 and No Man’s Sky. VR versions of Star Wars and The Walking Dead are also planned.

PSVR2 games announced by Sony:

  • The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR
  • Cities VR – Enhanced Edition
  • Crossfire: Sierra Squad
  • The Light Brigade
  • Cosmonious High
  • Hello Neighbor: Search and Rescue
  • Jurassic World Aftermath Collection
  • Pistol Whip VR
  • Zenith: The Last City
  • After the Fall
  • Tentacular
