Google has partnered with several streaming platforms to create a service centered on YouTube. This is the same service that was first reported in August.
YouTube is not new to paid subscription services. YouTube Premium (paid subscription with additional features) and YouTube TV (streaming TV service) are available on the platform. To potentially bring even more viewers to the platform, Google is launching Primetime Channels, a hub for other TV services like Paramount+ and Showtime. Thus, users will have a single store for all streaming services.
The idea itself is not new. Amazon Prime and smart TVs already offer similar options. However, with Primetime Channels, users will be able to subscribe to more than 30 YouTube channels and watch them on the website or app. It should be user friendly. For example, you can watch a new video on your favorite YouTube channel and immediately switch to your favorite show on Paramount+ without leaving the YouTube platform.
The following streaming services are offered as part of the initial launch of Primetime Channels:
- showtime
- Paramount+
- starz
- AMC+
- Epix
- Shudder
- Acorn TV
- Here TV
- CuriosityStream
- Comedy Dynamics
- Up Faith & Family
- hallmark movies now
- All BLK
- Vix+
- ConTV
- Docurama
- moviesphere
- Dove Channel
- IFC
- ScreenPix
- Fandor
- Law & Crime
- Scream box
- Dekkoo
- Tastemade+
- outside TV+
- Gaia
- Atres Player
- VSiN
- Topic
- Magnolia Selects
- The Great Courses
It should be noted that users will only have access to the streaming catalog of series or movies from these platforms. Users must view TV broadcasts directly through the provider. For example, services like Paramount+ have direct local CBS coverage. However, Primetime Channels will not support live content, only video on demand.
It is not yet clear if subscriptions purchased through Primetime Channels can be used outside of YouTube, or if the subscription is tied directly to the user’s account. Given the experience of other similar services, most likely the subscriptions will be tied to the hosting platform.
