Introduced in July, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra was already surprising users with its 1-inch camera sensor developed in partnership with Leica (a German company specializing in digital and analog cameras for home and professional use), but it turned out that the Chinese brand was working on something. more ambitious.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra concept is almost the same as the flagship device of the same name, but it also has a different 1-inch 50.3-megapixel sensor, additionally adapted to work with Leica M interchangeable lenses.
Here’s @Xiaomi ‘s promo video for the wild “12S Ultra Concept Phone,” which can mount any interchangeable @leica_camera M lens over its *second* 1-inch sensor. More here: https://t.co/CQkL6dayll pic.twitter.com/YEQNHdI4IE

Xiaomi chose to protect this secondary sensor (also a Sony IMX989 with 10-bit RAW support) with a large round piece of sturdy sapphire glass, rather than cutting a hole for it (as traditional interchangeable lens cameras do). And while this will indeed “hide” the sensor from dust and other foreign matter, it’s interesting how the extra layer of glass will affect the overall optical throughput of the camera.
The 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera has been moved to the side and takes up space where the 48-megapixel periscope telephoto lens once housed.
As shown in the Xiaomi video, in order to install the interchangeable lens on this 5G concept phone, you first need to unscrew the protective ring, and then use the adapter to install any Leica M lens.
A complete assembly with a Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens looks quite interesting from the outside. This combination is like one of the Android cameras connected to Yongnuo’s 4G, or even the good old Samsung Galaxy NX .
Xiaomi hasn’t said if the 12S Ultra concept will ever be mass-produced. The project is known to have been developed alongside the actual 12S Ultra and only 10 of these units were produced. A few samples have been handed over to happy VIP users for a short practice, but since each such unit costs approximately $41,210 to make, they better not say goodbye to smartphones too soon.
Phone?? Camera?? BOTH!
