After a long development period, the authors are finally ready to release the updated Dwarf Fortress game on Steam and Itch.io. This civilization management simulation game will be available in the listed stores on December 6, 2022 for $30. While it’s an old game that came out about 16 years ago and is available elsewhere for free, the paid version for Steam offers some updates and improvements.
First, the authors have improved the primitive visuals of the original project – ASCII graphics have been updated to tiled pixel art. Sound effects have also been updated, the game received an updated soundtrack. In addition, updated menus and user interface, a tutorial for beginners and some other improvements are designed to improve the experience of the old game. All this is designed to increase interest in the game in the eyes of the modern audience.
Tarn and Zach Adams have been working on the game for 20 years as part of their Bay 12 studio. They have teamed up with publisher Kitfox Games to release this updated version. The main Fortress and Legends modes will be available from the start, while the Adventure and Arena modes from the original game will follow later. In the future, the developers intend to make changes to the system of cards, procedurally generated myths and magic. According to a press release, there is “no end in sight” to this project. The original ASCII version of Dwarf Fortress will continue to be available for free download on the Bay 12 website.
