We have a new smart watch Amazfit T-Rex 2 on our review. Despite the number 2 in the name, this is the third model in the series – before it were Amazfit T-Rex and T-Rex Pro. The wrist gadget received a shock-resistant case, an impressive battery, an abundance of functions, sensors and sports modes, as well as a stylish design. Of course, they ask for a lot of money for this, but the price tag is still nicer than the more famous flagship models. In the review below, we will tell you in detail about the pros and cons of the device, we will decide for whom this watch was created, and who is better off looking for other models.

Design and materials

Amazfit T-Rex 2 is similar to Casio’s G-Shock series with a tactical design: round shape, imitation bolts, protruding bezel above the display, bulging side buttons and body elements, durable wide strap.

The main part of the rather thick body of the novelty is made of matte plastic. Metal bezel. The strap is silicone and removable, but not universal. Its width is 22 mm, there are two trench coats. Model dimensions 47.1 × 47.1 × 13.65 mm, weight – 66.5 grams.

On the back cover is a round branded BioTrackerTM 3 sensor.

Amazfit T-Rex 2 is protected according to the military standard MIL-STD-810G. The manufacturer claims that the model is resistant to falls and shocks, to rain and fog, to immersion in water to a depth of 100 meters (10 ATM) and to temperature changes in the range from minus 40 to plus 70 degrees Celsius.

Amazfit T-Rex 2 received a round 1.39-inch AMOLED screen. The pixel density is 326 ppi and the peak brightness is 1000 nits. There is also a built-in light sensor. Auto-brightness works correctly and quickly enough adjusts the brightness of the display to the external environment.

The screen turned out to be juicy and bright, numbers and small letters are clearly visible on it. The watch is comfortable to use in direct sunlight. Of course, the image still fades, but not so much that something does not read the notification, see the time, and so on.

There is an Always on Display function with a customizable clock depending on the installed watch face.

During use, the screen, of course, slams. But it is still quite resistant to pollution, so you rarely have to wipe it. In addition, the bezel hangs over the display, which means it becomes more difficult to scratch or hit the screen.

Functionality and interface

The smart watch runs on the Zepp OS proprietary operating system. The shell is quite ascetic, and the fonts are as simple as possible. But in the settings you can choose one of three themes for the icons in the main menu.

Zepp OS is easy to understand, everything in the system is intuitive and not overloaded. Touch control is duplicated by four physical buttons on the sides of the case. Near each of them there is an inscription about its capabilities.

Swipe from right to left opens the notification center. Swiping from left to right gives access to the main menu. A swipe from the bottom up launches a panel with widgets (controlling the smartphone player, displaying sunrise and sunset times, remote camera control, weather, sleep, and so on). Their number and order of location are configured through the application. Swipe from top to bottom opens the curtain with various functions. There is an exit to the settings, flashlight, calendar, auto-brightness, search for a smartphone, remaining charge, screen lock and more.

Amazfit T-Rex 2 did not receive any speakers or a microphone, so it will not work to answer calls. Incoming messages can only be rejected or sent as template text. The same with messages, but emojis are also available here. Replies in messengers are allowed with the same templates and emojis. Additional features include a compass and a barometer.

The novelty received a two-position GPS-module. It supports five satellite systems, so the watch accurately recognizes the owner’s location.

The watch has a built-in squeaker (buzzer), as well as a medium-intensity vibration motor. The strength of the vibration cannot be adjusted, but the volume of the buzzer can.

Connecting to a smartphone and software

Amazfit T-Rex 2 is connected to a smartphone through Zepp’s proprietary application. On the smartphone, you need to turn on Bluetooth, go to the program and scan the QR code on the watch screen using the camera. After we wait for the connection, firmware update and data synchronization.

The Zepp software has many different settings and activity displays, including the proprietary PAI indicator, which are duplicated on the watch itself. We didn’t forget the built-in store with 17 utilities, because it’s hard to call them applications. Among the programs there is a reminder to drink water, a calendar, smart home control, a tracker and so on.

A separate store is available with 150+ watch faces. All of them are free, but only a small part is ready for user editing. If desired, it is possible to create a dial yourself from a photo.

The application supports the Ukrainian language. The translation is good, the fonts or names do not “press” each other, but the “app store” was not fully translated.

Health and sports features

Amazfit T-Rex 2 was equipped with a proprietary BioTrackerTM 3 sensor. It consists of six photodiodes and a pair of LEDs and allows you to track sleep, stress, physical activity, sleep breathing, pulse, blood oxygen saturation.

Measurement of pulse and oxygen in the blood is quite accurate. The comparison was carried out with a conventional pulse oximeter and an Amazfit GTS 2 smart watch. But the error in steps is observed, as well as false counting of steps during morning rituals.

The smartwatch can track 158 types of physical activity, including climbing, fishing and parkour. If desired, some classes are assigned to automatic detection (running, walking, cycling, swimming). For 11 sport modes, you can create custom activity templates.

For hiking and other tasks with GPS, it is possible to upload your own routes (GPX, TCX and KML formats). They are displayed on the clock, and the user can follow them like a navigator. When deviating from the route, the watch warns with a sound signal and vibration. There is also a return to the starting point function – in this case, the watch will lead the user back.

During other physical activities, such as walking, GPS turns on quickly enough and monitors the route in detail. After the end of the lesson, detailed statistics are available, a map of the past, information on calories burned, heartbeat, and more.

But the watch does not have the ability to measure ECG, as well as the NFC module, which makes them less competitive compared to other expensive models. Let us now omit the quality of measurements of such sensors, but simply consider their presence as a plus. But few will argue about the convenience of NFC on watches.

Autonomy Amazfit T-Rex 2

Amazfit T-Rex 2 is equipped with a 500 mAh battery. An impressive battery provides good autonomy, but you have to pay for this with an increased thickness of the case. Although the same Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is the same in thickness, if not more, but they hold a charge many times less.

The manufacturer claims that the minimum battery life of the wrist gadget is nine days. With a modest charge consumption and disabled functions, the novelty can last 45 days.

In reality, it turned out not so rosy, but still worthy. In active use, with auto-brightness of the screen, with Always-on-Display by schedule, with activation of the screen by raising your hand by schedule, with constant measurement of heart rate, stress, breathing during sleep, with sleep analysis and with several hourly classes with active GPS , Amazfit T-Rex 2 lasted exactly six days.

If you turn off the AOD and do not start the GPS, then Lego can get to the nine days mentioned above. It’s hard to say at the expense of 45 days in a simplified mode, but if you turn off the tracking of physical activity, with sleep, stress, and others, then it’s quite possible for the watch to last two to three weeks.

Training with GPS on consumes approximately 15% battery in 2.5 hours.

Amazfit T-Rex 2 charges from 0 to 50% in about 30-40 minutes and up to 100% in about an hour and a half.

Cost and competitors

Amazfit T-Rex 2 is sold at a price of 8950 hryvnia. The amount is not small, but most of the flagship models of competitors are more expensive. Apple Watch SE 2 can be taken for 11999 hryvnia, but the popular Samsung Galaxy Watch4 44 mm will cost 7199 hryvnia.

If we take the protected models of Garmin’s direct competitor, they are also more expensive without AMOLED screens: Garmin Instinct Solar Tactical Edition costs 14408 hryvnia, and for the Garmin Enduro 2 Carbon Gray DLC Titanium they ask for 48499 hryvnia. The only thing that is approximately in the same price category and is popular among fans of tactical models is the Garmin Instinct Tactical Edition (10,356 hryvnias).
