Travis Fimmel, who plays Ragnar in Vikings, will play the likely antagonist, a soldier plotting against the Bene Gesserit.
The show, which has been in production since 2019, is based on the novel Sisters of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin Jay Anderson. The series will air exclusively on HBO Max alongside Danny Villeneuve’s 2021 adaptation of Dune and will follow the founding of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful female spy organization in Herbert’s Dune universe.
Variety reports that Travis Fimmel (Ragnar Lodbrok in Vikings) is joining the HBO Max series as Desmond Hart, who is described as a soldier with a mysterious past who forges a relationship with the Emperor. Hart plots against the all-female Bene Gesserit trying to give birth to the mystical Kwisatz Haderach Kwisatz Haderach is a concept from a series of novels by American writer Frank Herbert; a man who is able to look into the genetic memory of ancestors both in the female and in the male line. Travis Fimmel To Star In ‘Dune: The Sisterhood’ HBO Max Series https://t.co/sNzYOI9jY6

Fimmel’s casting introduces the first male in the Dune prequel series. Previously, Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson joined the series as sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen, respectively. Other Cast: Indira Varma, Sarah-Sophie Busnina, Chloe Lee, Faileanne Cunningham, Aoif Hinds and Shalom Brune-Franklin.
Hart’s presence as a villain in Dune: The Sisterhood is a speculative topic, but Variety’s description leaves little room for other speculation. The Bene Gesserit are known to be a force for good in the Dune universe, and anyone plotting against them could very well be an antagonist.
It will be interesting to see how Fimmel’s role will develop as the series’ acting dynamics are more complex than in Herbert’s original novel and Villeneuve’s film adaptation, where Paul Atreides is the obvious protagonist.
The Harkonnen sisters are the ancestors of House Harkonnen opposing House Atreides 10,000 years after the events of the HBO Max prequel series, so their motives may have surreptitiously portrayed those of future descendants. The Bene Gesserit, while usually a force for good, resorts to unpleasant practices such as genetic experimentation to achieve their ultimate goal.
Hart could oppose such dubious tactics of the Bene Gesserit organization, but it is likely that his motivation is still based on a certain corrupt personal satisfaction, given the positive nature of his opponents.
Fimmel is a strong casting choice regardless of his character’s ambitions, as his portrayal of Ragnar in Vikings and Marcus in HBO’s Raised by Wolves earned critical acclaim. Fans also seem to be thrilled with the casting news. The range of Fimmel’s acting will allow Desmond Hart’s character to appear as a charismatic soldier with strong morals and drastically change moods for betraying the Emperor or the Bene Gesserit.
