YouTube Music and Premium are showing very good growth rates – in just a year, Google’s streaming services added another 30 million new premium subscribers and now 80 million for two, according to Variety. The last time Google shared the statistics was in September 2021, when YouTube Music and Premium subscribers hit 50 million.
These new numbers indicate that YouTube Music and Premium are growing even faster this year than they were a year earlier — last year’s report said that in just one year, YouTube Music and Premium combined attracted another 20 million subscribers. Google does not disclose detailed statistics on paid YouTube subscriptions, so it is not known how much of that 80 million YouTube Music subscriptions and how much is Premium (the music service is part of a premium subscription). Moreover, this also includes free trial subscriptions, which in turn blurs the statistics even more.
If you compare YouTube Music with its main rivals, only the undisputed market leader Spotify, Apple Music, as well as Amazon Music and the Tencent service are bigger. In October, Spotify reported 195 million paid subscribers, which is a huge advantage. Apple Music, according to a recent Midia estimate, has 78.6 million subscribers, while Amazon Music and Tencent have about 68.1 million each.
It can be recalled that the official launch of YouTube Music and Premium took place in 2018 (first YouTube Music , and immediately after it Premium ). YouTube paid out $50 billion to content creators in three years. This includes the $6+ billion the platform paid out to the music industry from July 2021 to June 2022. The most popular video platform recently took the unprecedented step of offering a whopping 45% of ad sales to creators of YouTube Shorts, which garner more than 30 billion daily views worldwide.
In order to better understand the current realities, it is worth noting a few more details: in the last quarter, Google fell short of earnings forecasts, in particular through YouTube – ad revenue on the platform fell by 2%, to $ 7.07 billion. Shortly before the publication of the financial report for the quarter The company announced a significant increase in the cost of a YouTube Premium family subscription in the US and a number of other countries (Ukraine was not included in this wave) – by 25%, from $17.99 to $22.99 per month. And shortly before that, YouTube experimented with limiting high-quality 4K video to a Premium subscription and showing individual users 5-10 ads (non-skippable) before the video instead of two.
