LG Display has developed “invisible” speaker technology for vehicles, which uses a passport-sized panel that vibrates to play sound. The device was developed in conjunction with an unnamed major audio company. It is expected that samples will be ready next year for installation on the instrument panel and under the upholstery of the car interior.
The South Korean tech giant’s Thin Actuator Sound Solution is being promoted as a replacement for traditional vehicle speakers. Unlike today’s car audio systems, which use rather bulky traditional dynamic radiators, the Thin Actuator sound solution uses LG Display technology to create sound by vibrating the display plane or a special film radiator.
The 2.5mm thick and 40g sound reproduction panel measures 150mm x 90mm, allowing it to be installed in non-standard locations such as the dashboard, headliner, pillar and headrests.

LG Display and Sony used similar vibrating panels in OLED TVs. Although the technology itself is not an innovation, it has not yet become a mass replacement for traditional sound reproduction devices. LG plans to commercialize production of the Thin Actuator Sound Solution for cars in the first half of next year. You can find out how it actually works in January at the CES 2023 exhibition in Las Vegas.
