The other day it was reported that Mercedes soon intends to introduce a more productive mode of operation of the engine in some of its electric cars. But it can be activated only by car owners who agree to pay for this option additionally on the terms of a subscription – $1,200 per year.
After paying the subscription, you can access the Dynamic mode in Mercedes-EQ EQE and Mercedes-EQ EQS electric vehicles. It increases engine power by 20-24%, increases torque and cuts the 0-60 mph time by 0.8-0.9 seconds. The subscription does not require any physical upgrades to the hardware, but only software unlocks a more productive engine mode. Interestingly, this subscription-based access to Dynamic mode will be available in the US, but not in Europe.
The Dutch edition of Top Gear magazine talked to a representative of the local Mercedes branch about this topic. He said that there are “legal issues” that prevent the company from offering a wireless upgrade that would remove restrictions on electric motors. An official representative of the company refrained from giving any details in this regard.
It is worth noting that the Volvo Polestar 2 model received a software update at the end of last year. It increased the power of the electric motors from 300 to 350 kW and the torque from 660 Nm to 680 Nm. However, this was presented as a one-time upgrade to improve competitiveness, rather than paid access to enhanced features on a subscription basis.
