The original Google Chromecast debuted in 2013, representing the company’s vision of what a smart TV should look like and making any TV smart. The device also provides a convenient way to stream multimedia content from a smartphone to a TV. Nine years after its release and more than three years after its last update, the first Chromecast suddenly received a fresh firmware update.
The minor update does not contain any significant innovations – the version number has almost not changed (1.36.159268, compared to the previous 1.36.157768). However, this is a measure of how long the company is able to keep its popular devices up-to-date and secure.
Other devices in the line have also been updated, including the 2018 Chromecast and Chromecast 4K. The latter received a more substantial patch. It provides the device with the security updates released between July and October 2022. The 150MB update also fixes bugs and improves the console’s performance.
Just a few weeks ago, Google TV’s Chromecast 4K received an OS version update from Android 10 to Android 12. It’s not known if Chromecasts older than two years will receive the Android 13 update.
