The Corning company has prepared for release a new version of the protective glass Gorilla Glass Victus 2. It has become stronger than ever. For the first time, Corning claims that a smartphone must be able to withstand a drop from a height of one meter onto concrete, one of the most problematic surfaces for protective glass.
Importantly, Corning claims to make no compromises to achieve these properties. Like the 2020 Gorilla Glass Victus, the new glass should withstand a 2-meter drop onto an asphalt surface, withstand more than 20 consecutive one-meter drops, and should not be more susceptible to scratches.
The company did not claim that they had achieved any significant breakthrough in materials science. Gorilla Glass vice president Scott Forrester said the company adjusted the composition and “load profiles” until engineers achieved the required protection parameters.

According to Scott Forrester, more than 30% of falls occurred on concrete – more than any other surface. And the company strives to provide the best possible protection against such incidents.
When developing a new version of glass, engineers also took into account that smartphones have become 15% heavier and 10% larger over the past 4 years. Corning says its tests take these changes into account.
Forrester said that Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 will appear in ready-made smartphones from major manufacturers “in the next few months, primarily on their flagship phones.” It is assumed that the glass will debut in the line of flagship smartphones Samsung Galaxy S23.
