Over the past decade, the global ranking of billionaires has seen some interesting changes. At the top of the table, a lot of new people have appeared, and those who occupied the highest ranks have accumulated a little more fortune over the years.
Using Forbes’ annual data on billionaires, Visual Capitalist analyzed how the fortunes of the world’s 10 richest people have changed over the past decade.
Here is the current list of the richest people in 2022, with the year they first made the list:
The co-founder of Microsoft and now a philanthropist, Bill Gates, has periodically occupied the first or second place in the table since 2014, but now he has moved to the 4th place. The billionaire promised to give almost his entire fortune to charity.
From 2018 to 2021, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos held first place in the ranking of the world’s richest people, but was later overtaken by Elon Musk. In 2020, Bezos became the first person to amass a $200 billion fortune after Amazon’s stock price surged during the pandemic. Bezos’ net worth has taken a hit in recent months as Amazon’s stock price has fallen again.
Bezos also promised to give most of his money to charity.

The rich get richer
Over time, the average net worth of the richest billionaires has grown significantly. Most of the wealth is kept in the form of stocks and real estate.
Over the decade, the average net worth of the 10 richest people has nearly tripled, from $39 billion to $115 billion.
In fact, the first billionaire to cross the $100 billion mark was Jeff Bezos in 2018, when he topped the list, displacing Bill Gates. However, now almost everyone (except Steve Ballmer and Mukesh Ambani) in the top ten richest people in the world has crossed the $100 billion mark.
