On Stephen Colbert’s Toing Out The News, George Martin was “roasted” for the delay, calling the writer “truly pathetic.” He just laughed in response and said that there were 400-500 more pages to finish the book.
Fans of George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire — the novels adapted for HBO Max’s Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon — are already used to news about the “process” of The Winds of Winter (the sixth book in the series). , which lasted for 11 years.
George Martin wanted Game of Thrones to get at least 10 seasons, and even better 12 or 13
But Martin’s latest promises sound quite sincere – in one of the episodes of Stephen Colbert’s Toing Out The News, the writer said that he had written “1,100-1,200 pages and another 400-500 to go.”

In the show, animated Dr. Ike Bloom (voiced by Inspector Ike actor Ikechukwu Ufomadu) refers to George Martin as a “struggling writer” and says that “someone has trouble meeting deadlines.” Bloom calls the very productive crime writer James Patterson and asks him for advice for Martin on how to speed up work on the book.
Patterson first questions how far Martin has pushed his deadline and seems stunned when he learns of the long delay. He suggests that Martin has “writer’s constipation” and recommends a change in writing methods, including not using a DOS computer and WordStar word processor:
“Try something else because it’s not working.”
Martin has often stated that he is annoyed by fans and interviewers who constantly bemoan his slow progress on The Winds of Winter as the writer puts the book on the back burner and works on other HBO shows and projects. But on the show, George at least seems to try to respond to annoying questions with humor. However, the writer reacts sluggishly to the proposal to divide “The Winds of Winter” into parts (given the fact that a book of 1,700 pages is actually very difficult to handle physically).
“The task is solved!” – says Patterson. “You break 1,100 pages into three books… And you ship one book a year. Everyone will be happy, and you will be ahead of schedule!
Martin just smiles back.
On the eve of the release of the final series of the first season of “House of the Dragon” (a prequel to “Game of Thrones”), writer George Martin also visited Stephen Colbert. During the 10-minute interview, the interlocutors, in particular, discussed the current, far from utopian, state of peace and raised the topic of nuclear war.
“What will we do if Putin actually uses nuclear bombs? I wish I had a dragon to fly to the Kremlin!” said Martin.
