Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is one of next year’s most anticipated films, so it’s no surprise that it’s on the cover of the upcoming issue of British film magazine Total Film.
The film will tell about the life of the theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientific director of the Manhattan Project, within the framework of which the first samples of nuclear weapons were developed during the Second World War. Therefore, Oppenheimer, whose role in the film will be played by Cillian Murphy, is often called the father of the atomic bomb.

Murphy has already collaborated with Nolan five times (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk), but this is the first time he plays the lead role. The director surrounds the actor with a truly wonderful ensemble of stars, including Emily Blunt as Robert’s wife, Kitty, as well as Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh and Gary Oldman. Robert Downey Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, the chairman of the US Atomic Energy Commission, who will have a bitter conflict with Oppenheimer.

The film is based on the book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin (2005 Pulitzer Prize winner in the “biography” category).
In the new issue of Total Film magazine (on sale Thursday, December 15), Nolan elaborates on the film, which he describes as “a story of enormous scope and scale.” The magazine also features some exclusive images from the set, including Murphy playing the part at an audition, several shots of the main character with Blunt and Downey Jr.’s characters, and behind-the-scenes photos of Murphy in action, Nolan and cinematographer Hoyt van Hoytham (who has worked on every Nolan film since Interstellar).
Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer opens in theaters on July 21, 2023.
