Reviews of the premiere were so positive that Sony began development of a sequel. Sam Mackovich of Ars Technica called it “the best comic book movie in years, a warm welcome to those viewers who know the comic canon inside out, all without the scary moments for kids and the complications for new viewers, an incredibly family-friendly adventure.”
Shamik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld will reprise their roles, along with Jake Johnson as Peter Parker, Miles’ mentor from the 2018 film, Lauren Velez Moon as Miles’ mother, Rio Morales, and Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ father, police officer Jefferson Davis. New characters – Daniel Kaloui as Hobie Brown, “Spider-Punk”, (guitarist of a British punk rock band), Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, a pregnant Spider-Woman from another universe and Shea Whigham as Gwen’s father, a police captain George Stacey.
The official description of the film says:
Miles Morales returns in the next chapter of the Oscar-winning saga Spider-Man: Across the Universe. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, a “friendly neighbor from Brooklyn,” Spider-Man enters the Multiverse, where he meets a team of Spider-Men tasked with protecting her very existence. But as the heroes debate how to deal with a new threat, Miles encounters other spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero in order to save the people he loves most.
The highlight of the new trailer is the six different animation styles used for the universe of each incarnation of Spider-Man – a conscious creative choice by the filmmakers. Gwen’s house (Earth-65) resembles an impressionist watercolor where the colors change in response to Gwen’s emotions. Also shown is Earth-50101 (known as “Mumbattan”, a mix of Manhattan and Mumbai).
The main villain this time is Stain (Jason Schwartzman), whose body is covered in interspatial portals that look like “living ink spilled or splattered on a comic artist’s drawing.” Jorma Taccone, who voiced the Green Goblin in the 2018 film, returns in the sequel as the Vulture, sporting a Renaissance look inspired by the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci.
The trailer opens with a conversation between Miles and his mother, as she tries unsuccessfully to use modern teenage slang. “For years, I’ve been taking care of this little boy, making sure he’s loved, that he feels like he belongs wherever he goes,” Rio says. But she worries that “they”—presumably other incarnations of Spider-Man—won’t look after Miles the way his family does. She asks her son to promise that he will not forget where he comes from.
It’s Gwen who lures Miles into this new adventure, which involves a group of Spider-Man incarnations battling it out in interstellar space. It seems that not all of them are nice guys. Not many plot details are shown, but Stan Lee’s animated cameo alone makes it worth watching and sparks interest in the film.
Spider-Man: Invasion 2 hits theaters on June 2, 2023. The next sequel to the franchise is already in development, along with a spin-off featuring Steinfeld and Rey as Spider-Woman, as well as Cindy Moon’s character Silk.
