Death Stranding 2019 will receive not only its game sequel (which was announced at The Game Awards), but also a film adaptation. Kojima Productions and Hammerstone Studios, led by Alex Lebovich, who produced “The Barbarian,” will work on the project. Plot details have not been revealed, but the film is said to “introduce new elements and characters to the Death Stranding universe.”
The news is not too surprising, because last year the Japanese video game company Kojima Productions created a film and television division. And the head of the studio, Hideo Kojima, does not hide his love for cinema, which is why Hollywood stars often appear in his games. The original Death Stranding featured, among others, Norman Reedus (“The Walking Dead”), Léa Seydoux (“007: No Time to Die”), Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”), Margaret Qualley (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Oscar-winning director Thoreau .
There is no word yet on who might star in the movie from the worldwide game. There is also no time frame, but they say that “development is ongoing and accelerating.”
“I am excited to partner with Hammerstone Studios. This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I look forward to working together to bring Death Stranding to the big screen,” Kojima said in a statement.
Hideo Kojima is a world-renowned games creator who opened his own studio, Kojima Productions, in 2015 and received a BAFTA Fellowship in 2020, the highest award given by the British Academy of Television and Film Arts for an outstanding contribution to film, games or television.
