Google Search recorded record high traffic during the 2022 FIFA World Cup final

Record figures for the entire 25-year history of Google Search were recorded yesterday, December 18, during the final match between Argentina and France as part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

While Argentina is celebrating its victory, Google is taking stock of the traffic. CEO Sundar Pichai tweeted: “Seems the whole world was looking for one thing.”

Google has effectively become the information hub for the final, and the match itself a strong contender for the greatest event in FIFA history. The game is also likely to be the most watched final in history once the numbers are released.

Strong storylines and exciting in-game action definitely contributed to the record traffic and views: Lionel Messi finally winning the World Cup, Kylian Mbappe’s legendary performance, France’s second-half comeback, an incredible two-goal overtime and a nerve-wracking shootout.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk also reported record numbers on Twitter:

“24,400 tweets per second for France’s goal, highest ever in World Cup history!”.

Earlier, Google named the most popular searches of 2022: Ukraine, Wordle, Queen Elizabeth and cricket. The search engine also published a local ranking of the most popular queries in Ukraine: the list includes “Map of air alarms”, “Arestovych”, “Zhyrinovsky”, “Gostomel”, “Swift”, “Land Lease”, “Blackout” and others.
