Russia’s full-scale aggression significantly affected the well-being and financial condition of both ordinary Ukrainians and wealthy entrepreneurs. Due to military actions and terrorist attacks on civilian objects by the Russian occupiers, a significant number of industrial enterprises have been destroyed, supply chains have been destroyed, and business has huge problems with supply and sales.
Under such conditions, it is difficult to estimate the value of business owners’ assets. However, Forbes still compiled a ranking of the richest wartime Ukrainians and analyzed how their fortunes changed during the war – from February to December 2022. This year, Forbes evaluates only the twenty richest Ukrainians, although it analyzed information on 129 Ukrainian businessmen who were included in the ranking of the richest in the past two years.
It is noted that during the 10 months of the war, the wealth of the twenty richest Ukrainians was reduced by approximately half. The total value of their assets fell by $20 billion to $22.5 billion. Rinat Akhmetov continues to be the richest person in Ukraine, although he has the biggest losses. In less than a year, the total value of its assets decreased from $13.7 billion to $4.4 billion. The second and third places were taken by representatives of the IT industry – the co-founders of the Grammarly company Maksym Lytvyn and Oleksiy Shevchenko. As of the end of December, the fortunes of each of them are $2.3 billion, although before the war they owned assets worth $4 billion each.
In general, representatives of the IT sector occupied more than a third of the places in the Forbes TOP-20 military ranking of the richest Ukrainians – 7 places out of 20 (35%). In addition to the already mentioned IT entrepreneurs, the following rating participants should also be mentioned:
