AV-TEST, one of the leading anti-malware solution evaluation companies, together with AV-Comparatives shared some interesting statistics regarding the growth of malware in 2022.
The report says that about 70 million Windows malware appeared this year, which is 5,000 times more than macOS (where about 12,000 samples were detected) and 60 times more than the corresponding figures for Linux (2 million samples).

While the overall number of Windows malware is certainly high, the rate of growth has been slowing since September. The first image below shows the monthly growth, while the second shows the total number of malware and PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

Here’s the macOS infographic, and as you can see, while the overall amount of malware is relatively low, the rate of growth spiked in November and December.
Linux is perhaps the most impressive, as it seems to have completely eradicated new malware. Growth rates have been very low since June and remain so through December.
